Ok..
rather fast for a 2nd post..
But i just needed to pen my thoughts down on something. Im currently a med student in my 2nd year. All through out people have come up and asked me what i would like to specialize in. And up till today that question always stumped me. What kind of a med student am i if i have no liking, interest or inclination to any specific part of the field.
The prune is obssesed with surgery.
Mannie has taken a liking to skin.
Everyone has their own liking or their thing...Like im gonna specialize in this n blah blah blah..
People automatically assume that i would be interested in pathology since my dad is in the field,
and maybe ive not given it much of a chance but the subject bores me to death. Forensic is just too story book like...
And i resigned myself to the fact that i might just take whatever comes once i complete my degree or throw a dice n let fate decide.
That was how i felt until today.
I started my 3rd minor posting and for the first time i actually felt a tingling sensation as i spoke to the doctors, observed the patient and listened to the history of the field.
Psychiatry.
It stimulated me today the way no other medical field has done before. The wonders of the human mind. How until today we still are researching the causes and cures for so many illnesses we hear in the everyday news.
Alzheimers, Schitzophrenia,dementia...
The ability to want to learn and find out more has eluded me for a very long time.
But tommorow when i walk into those wards i know that finally something interests me.
It is the medical specialty which exists to study, prevent, and treat mental disorders in humans.
Fyi, the word psyche derives from the ancient greek word for soul.
